I agree James the meeting on January 13 held at 2:00 was very successful. We spent time discussing each and every student in the Academy. Covered in the conversation was how they are doing in each subject and what we can do to help them. I love the concern that was shown. As James stated we talked about what the collaborative project will be and it was decided that this project would be about Elections. James is going to meet with each of us on what our portion will be so he can act as the main organizer. I am going to write a mission and vision statement for the Academy and submit it to all of you for editing and approval. Also, discussed at the meeting were the trips to Universal Studio for the students. They are going to be covering a lesson plan on "How the Eye Perceives 3D" which is important this semester since 3D is what we are all about right now both for the DD part and I am sure for the Engineering portion as well of the Academy. This is also meant to be a motivator for our students to meet the required GPA by the time we go on this trip so they will be able to go. Since the part of what the state looks at is their improvement we need some motivation for them as well as some tutoring and positive encouragement. We also talked about some of us taking a trip to the FIDIM fashion show to see the students work from that college. It is a great show and was very motivating for me the last time I went. We talked about getting the PO's done as soon as possible as well. That really pretty much covers it.
I sent an e-mail out about how we need to set up the CAHSEE tutoring soon and asked if anyone had any ideas on how to proceed with that please send them to either me or James. Sarah answered that she had lots of material for us to use that will allow students to get ready for the English portion of the CAHSEE, thanks Sarah.
I agree that the meeting was very productive. I thought it was beneficial going through the list of students with all the Academy teachers so we could discuss each student individually. It helped me know how the students are doing in all of your classes and where they might need some extra help. The next morning, I talked to both of my Academy classes and reiterated what we talked about and tried to encourage/motivate them to keep up the good work and to improve their grades if they did not receive a C or better. We discussed several strategies of how they can improve their grade in my class as well as extra credit opportunities that can improve their grade.
ReplyDeleteAlso, since I am teaching Credit Retrieval this semester, I strongly suggested that any student that failed my class sign up to take Credit Retrieval with me now, so that they can improve their grade.
I think that our field trip will be a great activity and motivator for them and I hope we have a great turnout! Cindy
My first comment didn't post. I'll try again :)
ReplyDeleteHere are some of the adjustments made this week:
1. The homeroom changes are almost all complete and we've started to focus on nightly homework during the time. A few are resistant but we'll work through that challenge.
2. Peggy brought up the textbooks for each class. This should help kids finish up work.
3. I mentioned the field trip - and suggested that we need to make sure everyone in the homeroom gets to go ...
4. We talked about the exit exam.
5. We talked about a homeroom challenge with Mr. Stockdale's group.
