The weather was perfect, but the sprinklers were not so perfect! We arrived to set up only to find that the fields were either wet, getting wet, or in line for getting wet. The gym had been taken away so they could set up for writing on Monday. So... we set up on the blacktop. It was less comfortable, got us to a late start, and presented issues with tethering, but in the end we got rolling. The kids chose Toy Story 2, and attendance came in around 30 students. They seemed to enjoy the show and when polled after it was virtually unanimous that they would like to do it again. Sarah had the idea to do a scary movie sometime the week before Halloween, which they seemed to like. She also had a number of other great brainstorming ideas of theme nights and the like that could really enhance the experience. The trick there will be to find one that isn't rated R.
Overall though I would say it was a success.

ReplyDeleteThank you for setting this up James. It's important. Here is a quote from a recent publication:
ReplyDelete"In January 2010, the Kaiser Family Foundation released a study reporting that American children aged 8 to 18 spent an average of seven-and-a-half hours a day on electronic devices -- virtually every waking hour outside of sleeping and school. As William Powers points out in his recent book, "Hamlet's Blackberry," this digital time comes at the expense of face time with family and friends, physical exercise, and the experience of the natural world."
Sounds like they had a good time even with all of the obstacles. My geometry students were very excited about it during the day. They used my board as an advertisement. Are we going to do this every Friday?
ReplyDeleteI have scary movies as well:) Rated PG 13
